JJC Hire, a Cumbrian-based skip hire firm, has received £800,000 in green asset funding. It’s planning on using this to buy a 723kWh solar panel system to offset carbon emissions and take a step towards being self-sustaining.

JJC Skip Hire

Founded by David Armer in 2010, the company has progressed from a mere 5 members of staff to a team of 65 with 50 specialist vehicles. With the environment deep in the core values of the company, the introduction of solar panels will help the firm to reach new environmental heights.

Currently, 97% of all waste collected by JJC Hire is recycled. This goes a long way to introducing a worthwhile circular economy, limiting the amount of raw resources that need to be mined or collected from the environment.

“To aid our sustainable mission, we recently installed low carbon producing biomass boilers at our head office in Barrow-in-Furness to reduce our use of fossil fuels.” David Armer – Head of JJC Skip Hire

An Environmental Step

As a skip hire company, the operations are conducted at their waste transfer station. JJC Hire aims to now both steamline and modernise waste management practices. Thanks to the green investment deal, the introduction of solar panels will do just that. The array will allow the waste transfer station to power itself.

David Armer feels immensely proud to have built the company from the ground up without having to compromise on his environmental morals. In the first two months of 2024, over 121,000 tonnes of waste has been recycled already.

“Now, with these solar panels we can truly see ourselves as industry leaders, not only in waste management but in environmental awareness and this is in huge parts thanks to the funding of Lombard.” David Armer – Head of JJC Skip Hire

Why Skips Are Important

While it can sometimes be easier to take several trips to the household waste and recycling centre, there are important points that come with skip hire.

For starters, most of the waste that’s collected is recycled. JJC Hire’s track record of 97% is impressive. By making sure materials can be repurposed or reused, costs are kept down for removal of special items, and materials can be reintroduced to the supply chain.

Secondly, waste management is becoming increasingly important to help meet emissions targets. Not only does using a skip reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, but recycling materials in this way can save up to 95% of the energy needed to produce replacement products.

Finally, you can avoid excess methane emissions by hiring a skip. A lot of the time, green waste will simply decompose in landfill. Without air getting to it, methane is produced, which is a potent greenhouse gas. When using a skip firm, green waste is sent to be used as fertiliser.
